It's been awhile since I updated this blog! I'm much better at keeping my Tumblr page up to date. Additionally, I've made a facebook page since that seems to be a pretty good way to reach people.

I have some exciting stuff coming up for the rest of the year! First, I had my first art show/sale at Spider House last Saturday! My partner in crime Katie Cowden and I shared a booth and sold cards, prints, and her fantastic laser cut jewelry.

Here's Katie, feeling fabulous behind our booth:

Needless to say, I learned a lot about art shows. Aside from this one, I'd done one other art show at a small local gallery, and the anonymity that came with that show made it so much different from this one. Everything was hanging on walls with only a little number next to frames to identify the artist on a list, so it was much less about the artist and much more about the art.

This required me to sit right behind the things I was asking people to pay for, which was pretty nerve wracking.

It was a great learning experience though. I learned a lot about the importance of display, especially after Katie showed up with so many cool little table decorations and clever displays. I also learned that you have to be more aggressive with business cards, because only a handful of people took cards, and most of the time because I told them to take one.

I have a lot more ideas now based on what I saw people selling and what I noticed that no one had, so I'm ready to start working on things for the next show! Classes are getting in the way as usual, but I'll find some time.

The next thing I'm doing, for anyone who lives in Austin, is EAST, the East Austin Studio Tour. I went around a bunch of studios last year and it was pretty amazing. That's coming up in November, so I better get busy!

I've been working on some collaborative projects with Katie Cowden, whose work you should all go check out right now. This collaboration of course required me to draw some dead animals, so here you go. Horses.

This guy's looking a little lively for a dead horse.

I'm thinking of making a post card out of this one. Mentally place "Wish You Were Here" along the top and there we go. Perfect for your strange friends.

I suppose this would be the time to insert some sort of "beating a dead horse" quip, but I live a humorless and exhausted existence and have no time for such nonsense.

I have a cat named Spider, and he's pretty fat. Fatter than this, actually, but with the same confused expression.

He likes my shoes a lot, and so he always sits on them when I come home to visit my mother and sister.

Alright, NOW I can finally announce what I’ve been keeping bottled up for ages!

It is worth noting that this is the most exciting and fantastic thing that has ever happened to me. I’ve always dreamed about illustrating a Gaiman book, and this is more than I ever could have hoped for.
Neil Gaiman's Calendar of Tales website is finally up, and I am very flattered and very honored to announce that he chose my illustration for November. I remember finding out while I was at work and sitting in front of my computer and crying on the library books.  Now the kind comment he’s written is making me cry again. I’m a bit of a mess right now.

I don’t think I can express how honored I feel to have been part of this, and how happy I am that I was able to give back a little.  Neil’s work is incredibly inspirational to me. I have been lucky enough to meet him twice (and Amanda Palmer once as well!), and I cannot say enough how wonderful they are.
Please do go and look at all the wonderful submissions, and check September for my friend Katie’s submission!

And again Neil (I already tweeted this at you, but I’m going to shout it into the void of the internet yet again), thank you a thousand times! I can’t say that enough.

New URL!

Hello all! Within the next few weeks I'm going to change my URL to match my tumblr URL, so I'll be I just wanted to give people a heads up so there wouldn't be any confusion. This is a URL I chose in high school, and I'd rather have everything match at this point.

Here’s my submission to Neil Gaiman’s Calendar of Tales for the month of November! Initially I was going to do watercolor, but since I only have this weekend to work on it, I opted for a medium that wouldn’t have to sit and dry.

This is the first time I’ve worked from a prompt in a long time, so it was refreshing! I love this whole project. It’s such a great way for readers to give back to the fantastic Mr. Gaiman for his awesome body of work.

Now I’m ready for a week of no deadlines, and whatever free music I can find for South by Southwest.

Not feeling this school thing anymore. I think it's time to graduate.
Demon weasel anyone?
